Dodgy Practices of Employment Service Providers Uncovered
The Guardian have exposed the shady practices of job service providers, who claim public money for work they didn’t do. This profit-driven system benefits dishonest providers while leaving job seekers and employers wondering why these job providers even exist.
Wealthy Winners of Privatised Employment Services
Speaking of dodgy job service providers... Last week, Sarina Russo, the owner of Sarina Russo Job Access and many other employment services businesses, made headlines with her "get a job" remarks. Claiming that financial independence comes from getting a job and “relying on yourself” all while she has made a fortune off government contracts.
Russo's wealth from the privatised employment services system is staggering, with an estimated net worth of $271 million. According to Michael West Media, Russo has been one of the biggest winners of the privatised employment services scheme, with her companies raking in over $600 million of taxpayer dollars since 2015. It's clear: privatisation doesn’t work—it just lines the pockets of the already wealthy.
We're demanding better
An alliance of community organisations and trade unions, including the CPSU, brought together by the Australian Council of Social Services (ACOSS) have written to Employment Minister Tony Burke.
The letter calls on the Government to use the upcoming Federal Budget to commit to full-scale reform of the employment services system. The letter makes clear that the problems within the current system extend well beyond ineffective assistance and are causing people harm.
The latest call for action follows a federal inquiry conducted last year that unequivocally concluded that the privatisation of the employment services system has been a failure. The government must act now.
